Jacob Kainen (American 1909- 2001)

Kainen was born in Connecticut in 1909. His family moved to New York in 1918 providing him with a supremely effective environment in which to train his artistic carreer. He joined the Art Students League in 1926 and the Pratt Institute in 1927. He originally did not receive a diploma from Pratt because he was "consistently asserting independence in aesthetic outlook." (He obtained the diploma at last in 1942). He joined the New York Graphic Arts Project in 1935, then in 1942 went to work for the Smithsonian Institution, becoming Curator of Graphic Arts in 1946. He became Curator of Prints and Drawings at the National Collection of Fine Arts in 1966. He received many prizes and grants and participated in numerous exhibitions over his carreer.
