Lot 57. Portrait of a man with a saddle on artist's board, matte finish, signed lower right and dated 1959, framed, apprx image size 30" x 24", apprx frame size 35" x 29". Strong affiliation with California, known for narrative, illustrative and marine works. During his younger years he studied at the California School of Fine Arts for one term while working as a commercial artist in Sausalito. Between 1935-42, Merritt had a studio in New York, but divided his time between the East and West coasts. He moved with his wife to Capitola after World War II and worked as an illustrator for Railroad Magazine and also did illustrations for California history books during the 1940s-50s.
