Lot 37. A portrait of a man with pipe. Oil on canvas, signed upper right and dated (19)'05. Canvas apprx 11-1/4" x 9", with frame apprx 19" x 16-1/2". Plaster frame with glass and artist plaque. A seated man viewed from a 3/4 angle, wonderful details in hands and face. This man sat for many portraits for the artist and his image can be found in many auction records. Known for his genre portrait paintings, Kotschenreiter was also an illustrator. In 1869-71 he studied architecture at the Nuernberger College of Arts and Crafts, in 1872-80 at the Residents of Munich AK under A.V.Wagner and Piloty, and was master pupil there since 1875.
