A. Fuerst (German - )

A. Fuerst (German late 19th century-early 20th century)

November 2003 Fine Art & Antiques Online Auction
Lot 76. A fabulous historical painting of the sinking of the Elbe. This oil on canvas is beautifully framed in a decorative gilt frame and is signed A. Fuerst in the lower right corner. A. Fuerst is thought to have been one of the twenty survivors of the ill-fated Elbe. On January 30, 1895, the 4,150 ton Elbe was sailing from Bremen to Southampton with a destination of New York, with 335 persons on board. Her demise was wholly due to the reckless navigation of the British vessel Crathie, which rammed the German liner and then left her to perish and her passengers to flounder in a roaring sea. Of her 335 passengers, 20 escaped, 5 passengers and 15 of the crew. This painting is apprx 29-1/2" x 39-1/2" image size and apprx 37-1/2" x 47-1/2" framed.
