Elihu Vedder (American 1836- 1923)

Elihu Vedder is famous for his illustrations in Edward FitzGerald's 19th century translation of "The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam". He also did sketches for Vanity Fair and was involved in the 'In Arte Libertas' group, inspired by Gabriele D'Annunzio in Rome. The Cleveland Museum of Art has a Vedder paintng included in their current exhibit "The Gilded Age".

Lot 166. "Woman In Thought". Charcoal with white highlighting on paper, not signed, matted in a French lined mat and framed in a gold leaf burnished finish frame under glass, 9-1/4" x 10-3/4" sight size, with framing overall 16-1/4" x 17-3/4". There is a label on the back of the dust cover from Grand Central Art Galleries, Inc. from an exhibition entitled "La Femme", March 6 - August 15, 1984.
