Lot 104. An engraving after Goltzius, a sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) stranded on the coast at Katwijk. Van der Gouwen was a Dutch engraver and mapmaker, active in Anvers and Amsterdam. This is a double page engraving (crease down the center). Signed in the plate and dated 1598. Impression size apprx 10-6/8" x 13". overall paper apprx 12-5/8" x 15-7/8". Cream colored, chain lined paper with visible watermark.
