Kees Van Dongen (Dutch 1877- 1968)

Kees Van Dongen first gained prominence when he exhibited in 1905 with the Fauves (the "wild beasts" for their raw use of color and form and their general refusal to paint like anyone else then showing at the salons). He was born in Holland and moved to Paris in the 1920's, embracing the Parisian lifestyle. He moved into Bateau-Lavoir where he lived amongst Picasso, Jacob, Gris, Modigliani and Rousseau. Van Dongen was among the finest of the Fauve painters, with a brilliant expressive use of color and form.
