Lot 43. Still Life. Oil on canvas. Signed "Lorjou" on the lower right corner. Hand-carved gilt frame. Image measures approx. 15-1/2"H x 11-5/8"W; framed overall approx. 22"H x 18"W. Bernard Lorjou is a prominent French painter, who employed his talents as a tool to express his political views. However, in between doing his monumental paintings, he painted simple objects and still lives, such as this one. His first major exhibition was held at the Wildenstein gallery in New York in 1954. In 1957, Lorjou showed his work "The Rambouillet Massacres" in a specially-built shed at the fair at the Invalides in Paris. In 1963, his works were shown on a barge which went throught Paris on the Seine; in 1965 Lorjou was commissioned by the to design a set of posters on the theme : "fight hunger, win peace".
