Pair of Portraits Attributed to Allen Smith Jr. (American, 1810-1890)

Lot 21. Pair of Marriage portraits of Augustus and first wife Harriet Spencer Handy (d.1851) of Massillon, Ohio. These were both included in the Cleveland Museum of Art exhibition entitled "Portraits of men and women who have had an important part in the making of Cleveland", July 6th through August 24th, 1919. Augustus (1818-1891) was the brother of P.T. Handy, the head cashier for J.D. Rockefeller. He owned several double mast ships on lakes Erie and Huron. These are extremely well executed, large liknesses of a handsome young couple. Each is 36" H x 29" W. Framed in bronzed finish frames by E.J. Pirson (a framing company of the 19th-early 20th Century in Cleveland), with applied ornaments with old rolled glass. Cleveland Museum of Art tags on versos.
