Lot 72. Mining Landscape. Oil on paper, matted and framed under glass, signed and dated in lower right corner "Carl Gaertner, 1948, Demonstration, One Hour" indicating that this piece hung in the Toledo Museum of Art for a demonstration before Gaertner's pupils. This painting portrays a landscape with mining buildings in the foreground in hues of brown, pink, white and chartreuse highlights on the hillsides and in the sky. The image measures apprx 21" x 28" and framed measures apprx 33" x 40-1/4".

Lot 57. "Along Chagrin River Road". Oil on canvas by the Cleveland School artist, Carl Gaertner, signed lower right corner, framed, 16" x 20" canvas size; with frame 25" x 28-1/2". An early Fall landscape with dappled sunlight illuminating trees along a river bank in the Ohio location noted in the title. A very fresh rendition of a lovely day.It has a typed titled card affixed to the verso.

Lot 49. "Christmas Eve". Oil on canvas, framed, circa 1928. Gaertner studied at the Cleveland School of Art (now the Cleveland Institute of Art) with Henry G. Keller and Frank Wilcox. He is best known for his American industrial landscapes depicted with raw and gritty strength. His interest in these subjects was initially sparked by the Cleveland Museum of Art May shows of the early 1920's. At that time the museum instituted a catagory of industrial painting for their annual regional exhibition. Gaertner's most sought-after paintings are now his moody night time scenes in urban settings which date mainly from the 1920's. This painting depicts a holiday night time scene in Public Square, downtown Cleveland, Ohio; the Old Stone Church landmark is visible near the center of the composition. Painting is signed on lower right corner. Verso holds a tag from the Cleveland Museum of Art 10th Annual Exhibition of Cleveland Artists and Craftsmen, April 25 to June 3, 1928. Also a handwritten "March 1963--Hous Billing, Gaetior Estate". Canvas measures apprx 34" X 30". With ridged gold painted frame, entire item measures apprx 38-1/2" X 34".

Lot 56. Landscape, circa 1943. Oil on masonite, signed and dated "Carl Gaertner 1943" on the lower left corner, in a white washed wood frame, image size approx. 14-1/2" x 20-1/2", framed overall approx. 22" x 28". During his life Gaertner, a native Clevelander, was both a painter and a teacher. He graduated from the Cleveland School of Art, became a member of their faculty and taught there until his untimely death at the age of 54. His realistic style of work addressed a variety of subjects, including the early urban landscapes of the steel industry in Cleveland and Pittsburgh. The main focus of his work was always evocative of the specific mood he wished to convey. Over the course of his career, Gaertner was a well respected painter winning many awards, garnering both local and national recognition.

Lot 65. An interior scene of a steel mill. Tempera on board, signed and dated 1941 on the lower edge to the left of the center, framed in the original frame and glazed with plexi, board size approx. 28" x 40", with original 3-1/2" wide painted frame, 35" x 47-1/2". The painting is reputed to be of the interior of J & L Steel, a large steel making firm in the heyday of the steel industry in Cleveland.
