Lot 60. "Tennis Match", oil and sand on canvas, signed and incised "Baumeister" on the lower right corner, also signed and dated on the verso, in a painted wood frame, image size approx. 30-3/4" x 23-3/4", framed overall approx. 36-3/4" x 29-3/4". Influenced by primitive art and Miro's surrealism, Baumeister created abstractions that contain mechanical and organic forms. In later works (e.g., Reddish Relief with Sand, 1950; Baumeister Coll., Stuttgart) he included ideographic signs in his compositions. Provenance: From the collection of Tom Wilson, Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Wilson's collection spans several decades and includes wonderful Art Deco, sculpture, paintings and drawings from around the the world. Mr. Wilson is a well know cartoonist and creator of the character Ziggy.
