Lot 70. Self-portrait. Oil on canvas over board, signed lower right and dated '27 or 28. In a brown wood frame, image size approx. 25-1/4" x 18-1/2", framed overall approx. 29-1/2" x 23". Elmer Novotny, born in 1909, was a long-time resident of Ohio, teacher at Kent State University and painter of portraits, figures, still-lifes and landscapes. He studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art and London's Slade School of Art. In the 1930s, like many other socially conscious artists, Novotny painted American workers at their tasks.
