Late afternoon or early morning sun highlight in a dramatic diagonal, lighting the 3/4 view of the mother's face and the baby's head. Note the expert handling of the light on the mother's face. A cat is to the right drinking milk with another sleeping on a chair to the left in the shadows. In a substantial, carved frame. Overall with frame apprx 33-1/4" x 40-1/2". Provenance: Ex Coll. John Gobey, Columbus, Ohio, by descent. Documentation of this piece will accompany the sale of this painting. With gallery tag from the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts inaugural exhibition, January 1931, on loan from the collection of Mr. John Gobey. Bernard de Hoog studied and worked in Amsterdam until 1899, then worked in Lauren from 1903 to 1924. He also lived in Bussum before moving to The Hague, where he died in 1943.
