Lot 16. "Soldiers Return". Oil on canvas, laid on board, signed lower right "G. Inness 1875". Verso has restoration tag from the Cleveland Museum of Art # TR 16900/15. Canvas depicts a landscape with a man on a path with soldier's knapsack, approaching an ox cart in the distance. To the left is a small farm house against the trees with smoke rising from the chimney. Image measures apprx 9-1/4" x 13-1/2", with elaborate gilt frame apprx 15-1/2" x 19-1/2". Listed in part II of "The Works of George Inness" by Leroy Ireland, page 433. Previously auctioned at Mathews Auction Gallery, N.Y.C., March 2-3, 1876, catalogue #119. Last auctioned in Cleveland, OH, 1989, page 24, lot #85A, catalogue # unknown.
