Albert Insley (American 1842- 1937)November 2004 Fine Arts & Antiques Auction Lot 19. "Down The Hudson from Below Poughkeepsie". Oil on canvas, signed lower right "Albert Insley 1880", framed. A fine Hudson River School inspired canvas of a steam barge on the Hudson River. On a four keyed stretcher, the back of which is inscribed in pencil by the artist. Following artist's title, "Painted by Albert Insley 51 West 10th St. New York City". Canvas measures apprx 20" x 32", overall in mid 20th Century frame apprx 27-1/2" x 39-1/4". From 1872-1918, Insley lived and worked from this address, offered to him by a patron. Most of his subjects are views along the East River; New York Harbor; barges along the Hudson; Brooklyn and the north shores of Staten Island; northern New Jersey and Boyonne; and later along the coast of Maine. His work is in such collections as the Archives of American Art, Washington, D.C.; Cragsmoor Free Library, New York; Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington; Harding Museum, Chicago; Jersey City Museum, New Jersey; Preservation Society, Newport, Rhode Island; and the Rockland Historical Society, New York. 4000.00/6000.00 Sold $5,405.00 |
