Lot 37. A tavern serenade. Oil on canvas, signed in the lower right corner, dated 1891, framed in a simple dark bronze finished frame, 35" x 49-1/2", with framing overall 39-1/2" x 55". A monk at the right of the composition observes a jovial musical moment in a tavern setting. There are some lovely details about the entire composition, including a picture of the Madonna and Child behind the monk, a lantern above him, the architectural setting with a fireplace and a copper charger on the mantel, the smoking brazier on the floor in front of the lady, and other accouterments in the room as well as the costumes and poses of the people. The central figures are vividly painted.
