Lot 87. Untitled scene with working men at rest. Oil on canvas, signed on the lower right corner. Framed in a carved wood frame. Image measures approx. 13" x 17"; framed overall approx. 19" x 23". Albert Pels was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He studied at the Cincinnati Academy of Art and the University of Cincinnati. While in New York, Pels studied with with Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League.

This is a strong image for the artist, born in Cincinnati, Ohio, who was known for urban genre scenes and mural work. His work is typically classified as mid-20th Century Social Realism, depicting working class people in daily life.

Oil on canvas, signed in the lower right corner, framed in a carved corner frame with self-liner, 22" x 14" canvas size, with framing overall 30-1/2" x 22-1/4". The painting is on a sturdy newer canvas, stretched on older stretchers to which a new wood member has been added at the bottom.

Lot 71. Portrait of a beautiful young woman. Oil on canvas, inscribed on verso "By Albert Pels, NYC...(on reverse)...Given to Clyde Singer...1955", framed in a newer ornate frame with a linen liner, canvas size approx. 22" x 16", with framing overall approx. 30-3/4" x 24-3/4". Additionally, there is a small color sketch on the reverse, upside down, of a black person. The back of the canvas is covered with an acetate sheet so the inscription and the sketch are visible. This is one of the prettiest examples of Pels' work to come on the auction market in recent years, exhibiting a delicacy and sensitivity in its depiction of the young sitter.
