Constantin Ernest Adolphe Hyacinthe Guys (French 1802- 1892)

Guys was trained as a draughtsman. His father was a chief administrator of the Merchant Navy in the northern Netherlands, but Guys lived for most of his life in France as well as spending time in England from 1848. He belonged to the first generation of illustrators to be employed by the earliest of the great illustrated journals. A correspondent for the Illustrated London News and for Punch in 1842, he was able to travel widely to such locations as Bulgaria, Spain, Italy and Egypt, sending back sketches to be engraved as magazine illustrations. Along with recording the festivities for the Memorial Service for Greek Independence in Athens and The Sultan at the Bairam Festival in Constantinople, he also had to cover the Crimean War in 1855 and witnessed the horrific battles at Inkerman and Balaclava.
