Lot 17. Harbor scene at dawn. Oil on canvas on shaped stretchers signed lower right and dated 1864. Oval canvas measures approx. 16-1/2" x 19-1/4"; in a dark wood oval frame approx. 23" x 26". There is an engraved metal nameplate at the bottom of the frame. This luminous harbor scene has all of the typical assets of Aivazovsky's compositions; the bright sunlight illuminates the misty air over calm waters, while men in fishing boats are seen with varying amounts of clarity due to the mist. Several buildings are seen to the left of the composition, and gulls fly over the water and stand on floating pieces of wood.
