John Sargent Noble (British 1846- 1896)

John S. Noble was a painter of sporting subjects who studied painting at the Royal Academy Schools and later became a pupil of Landseer. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1872. He was known to collaborate on several very large compositions with other artists relating to sporting subjects. The Otterhound is an old British breed with ancestors in the Bloodhound and Airedale Terrier breeds. According the the Westminster Kennel Club, the Otterhound was originally used to thin out otter populations which were said to interfere with trout and salmon fishing. It is a large dog with an amiable, boisterous and even-tempered personality.

Lot 35. "Otterhounds". Oil on canvas, signed in the lower left corner, 30" x 25" canvas size, with coved and beaded gilded wood frame overall, 35-1/2" x 30-3/4", with nameplate at on the frame. Four beautifully painted dogs rest in various postures before an open stable door, through which another dog can be seen sleeping. To the right hangs a red coat and a bucket and push-broom below. The door and door frame have been roughly coated with metal sheeting to protect it from wear. Similar devices were used by Noble in many of his compositions. The frame has a label from Richard Green on the reverse.
