Brother protecting his sister in a storm. Oil on canvas, approx. 30" x 25", no signature found, framed overall approx. 36" x 31-1/2". A most dramatic representation of two children spot lighted in the center of the composition and surrounded by a ferocious storm. To the left is a tilted signpost and to the right a bolt of lightening. This sort of theatrical drama plus the depiction of children has been an extremely popular subject in England since the 18th century. The hardships of rural life found expression in many artists' works as well.
