| 100. Antonin-Marie Chatiniere (French b.1828)
Opéra comique lithograph poster of "Lakme" an opera in three acts with the music by Leo Delibes. Framed including gallery tags on verso, image size is apprx 23" x 31-1/2". The melodramatic scene of bereavement is a common motif in French Romantic painting. It is likely that Chatiniere, who exhibited as a painter in the Salon de Paris, was influenced by this tradition. Like history painting in the grand manner, grand opera focuses on heroic and tragic stories and mythology. The poster designs reflect the epic scenic effects of the operatic works that they advertise. 200/300 Sold $172.50 back to catalog |
