Lucas van Leyden is considered to be the first great Renaissance master printmaker produced by the Netherlands. He was largely influenced by Albrecht Durer's works toward the end of the first decade of the sixteenth century. In 1521, Lucas and Durer met during Durer's trip to the Netherlands, winning the support of the new Regent for the renewal of his pension. (Emperor Maximilian I). van Leyden combined Netherlands' traditional stylistic approach with Durer's inspiration and the Italian style of Jan Gossaert, a style that dominated Netherlandish printmaking for an entire century.
