16. Circle of Urs Graf I (Swiss, c. 1485 - 1527/1529)

From Catalogue 3 of Les Enluminures, Paris: "In pen and white ink on dark red prepared paper, these two unusual drawings are contemporary copies after Urs Graf's celebrated series of white-line engravings of the Standard Bearer of "The Cantons of The Swiss Confederation" done in 1521 (Hollstein, 30, 39). In the engravings, the standard bear the heraldic symbols and the names of the cantons, whereas in the drawings the standards are blank and the lansquenets are not indentified. Trimmed above and below, the drawings are of distinguished provenance and in generally good condition. Provenance: Vienna, Albertina, sold by the Archduke Frederick of Hapsbourg, Joseph Meder, Vienna; Phillip Hofer (1898-1984), Cambridge, Mass; Leroy M. Backus, California; Ian Woodner (d. 1990), New York. Literature: compare Santa Barbara, 1986, illustration no.99, and Princeton N.I. 1981.
