131. The Architectural Antiquities of Athens, by Stuart & Revett

Imperial Quarto, published by Weale and Piper, originally sold in four volumes. These two volumes are re-issues dating c.1850-1. Both books are apprx 11" x 14-3/4", marbled covers and end boards, part leather with tooled gilt bands and have ex-libris plates of F.A.Barrett and bookseller Alexander Brown Griswold, Maryland. Apprx 104 plates total.

The first accurate survey of the surviving classical buildings of Athens, this work exerted considerable influence over the establishment of a Greek revivalist style in 18th-century English architecture. Stuart and Revett carried out the survey during the period March 1751-January 1754, at the instigation of the Society of Dilettanti.
