146. Dresden Tea Service

An outstanding hand painted porcelain service for six, set includes tea pot apprx 6", creamer apprx 4", sugar with lid apprx 4", six cups and saucers (cup apprx 2" and saucer appx 1" x 5-3/4". Marked on verso with blue paint "Dresden Germany" with emblem. Impressed with the numbers "560" and the letter "S" and a cartouche with a crown with the letters G(?) and H. Each item hand painted with a differnt scene from Greek mythology. (see details page for painting descriptions) Purchased by the current owner from Fordem Galleries, Cleveland Ohio.

Tea pot: a youth and maiden frolicing in the Maenad dances, an Athlete in the Pythian games, slaying of a ram at the foot of the alter to the Three Graces. Creamer: Juno the goddess of Earth & Air with a peacock. Minerva, goddess of War wearing a helmet, shield and spear. Sugar bowl: Same scene of Ram sacrifice as on tea pot. Also shown are Jupiter and Antiope. Cups: Various scenes of ancient Greece, including stories from Ulysses, and Bacchanalian scenes.
