7. After Jean-Etienne Liotard (Swiss, 1702-1789)

"La Belle Chocolatiere". Oil on canvas, framed, 16-1/2" x 12-1/2" canvas size. Gallery tag on verso reads "B. Ewens". In a lovely old gilt frame. The painting is not signed.

Liotard was best known in his day as a portrait and miniatures painter. He came to be known as "The Turkish Painter" after a four-year stay in Constantinople where he executed a large number of pastel portraits, and himself adopted the habit of wearing Turkish costume. There exist may paintings after the original. As a very popular subject, the charming composition appears frequently at Old Masters auctions. This version, smaller than the original, is particularly well painted. The original work is at the State Art Collection in Dresden.
