30. Bookplate by Félix-Hilaire Buhot ( French 1847-1898)

Bookplate for the book "Bewitched" by Jules Barbey D'Aurevilly (1801-1899). Etching on cream paper, matted and framed, plate measures apprx 6" x 8-5/8". Buhot's stamped monogram incorporates his initials and an owl, which is found on the image, bottom center. Inscribed statement and signature, lower right in brown ink. Statement regarding the use of the image as a book plate for private, not public use. Inscribed in pencil in lower left margin "Henry Harper Esq". Harper was the operator of "The Bibliophile Society" publication. He was a book sophisticate, however not a member of either The Grolier Club or The Club of Odd Volumes.

A student of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Buhot went on to become one of the most accomplished and acclaimed 'peintres-graveurs'. Buhot's etchings are prized amongst collectors for their brilliance in depicting shadow and light.
