114. Robert Adams Book Plate
"View of the Porta Aurea". Original engraving from the book of Robert Adams' Grand Tour (1754-1757.) engraved by P. Santini. Plate XII. c. 19th Century, 14 15/16 x 13 -7/8", approx image size 13 1/4" x 13 1/4". Book matted with cellophane.
Robert Adam's spent five weeks in Spalatro during July and August of 1757 accompanied by the French architect and artist, Charles-Louis Clerisseau. The resulting book was a combined effort of several fine mid-eighteenth century artisans. Aside from drawings by Clerisseau, the plates were engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi, Francesco Zucchi, and Paolo Santini. Thomas Jefferson, while not owning a copy himself, is said to have recommend that the University of Virginia purchase a copy for the permanent collection.
