"Capioller Mountains", c. 1870. Oil on paper, on canvas, signed. Measures apprx 15-1/2" x 19-1/2". Askevold is considered one of the great Norwegian artists of the 19th century. His career was established where he first worked in Bergen (Norway), where studied with H.L. Reusch and later after 1855 in Dusseldorf, Germany, where he was a student of Hans Gude at the Academy. Askevold moved permanently to Dusseldorf, Germany to spend the remainder of his life.
Nearly all his works show motifs from Norway. He depicted the Nature and the Country Life in the Fjords during summer. He concentrated on fjord scenes, landscapes, coastal scenes, norweigian countr life and genre subjects, as well as scenes with animals (principally cattle). Askevold visited his native country regularly during the summer months to find inspiration for new pictures. His paintings were exhibited widely throughout Northern Europe, incurring favorable comparison with such contemporaries as the American landscape painter Albert Bierstadt. He was even referred to as the "Bierstadt of Norway" by the art critics of Berlin and Munich.
