Portrait miniature of a beauty, oil on copper, no signature found, approx. 2-3/4" x 2-1/2 oval, in a modern oval frame without glass overall approx. 4" X 3-1/4". There is an inscription on the verso of the copper panel which is mostly obscured. The subject bears a strong resemblance to the Marquise de Montespan, mistress of King Louis XIV ca. 1667, though her costume is similar to other portraits of women of the day. Purchased from Norton B. Gardner Antiques, Cleveland, Ohio 1971.

A portrait miniature, oil on ivory, set on the lid of a snuff box, signed at the right J. V Neesen, depicting a beautiful young woman in 18th century costume. The portrait is glazed with a glass lens surrounded by a gold bezel, inset in the tortoise shell lid. The interior is also clad in gold metal. The subject bears a strong resemblance to other portraits of the Marquise de Sevigne, known for her memoirs during the reign of Louis XIV. Overall it measures approx. 3-1/4"D x 1"H. Provenance: purchased from The Norton Galleries, 1975.

Hand written paper label on verso in French, mainly illegible, but it refers in part to the family of de Caumartin. Provenance: purchased from The Norton Galleries, 1975.
