57. Warren Chase Merritt (American, 1897-1968)
Portrait of a man with a saddle on artist's board, matte finish, signed lower right and dated 1959, framed, apprx image size 30" x 24", apprx frame size 35" x 29".
Strong affiliation with California, known for narrative, illustrative and marine works. During his younger years he studied at the California School of Fine Arts for one term while working as a commercial artist in Sausalito. Between 1935-42, Merritt had a studio in New York, but divided his time between the East and West coasts. He moved with his wife to Capitola after World War II and worked as an illustrator for Railroad Magazine and also did illustrations for California history books during the 1940s-50s.

Riverbank Scene. Oil on canvas, framed, 19-1/2" x 15-1/2", signed T.B. Griffin on lower left. Serene landscape painting, depicting a riverbank. Colors are muted grays, blues, greens and browns. Discoloration of pigment is due to damage from smoke. Griffin is best known for his tranquil landscapes.

62. Antonio De Vity (Italian, 1901-1980)
Two Parisian street scenes titled "Paris", oil on canvas, image size apprx 9-1/2" x 7", framed with beige/green velvet border, frame size apprx 14" x 12", signed lower right. Thick pigments on surface. Biography tag and The W.J. Burger Co. tag on verso.
He was born in Reggio-Calbria, southern Italy. He lived in Naples and later moved to Rome where he was taught by Giacomo Balla. He spent much time in Paris and was heavily influenced by the Impressionist era. Devity sold many paintings from his studio in Naples. His works have won many international awards and he is recognized for his lively street scenes of Paris and Italy.

65. Edmund Minor Archer (American, b. 1904)
A forest interior, watercolor on paper, signed lower right and dated '51, framed with glass, apprx image size 14" x 20-1/2", apprx frame size 22-1/2" x 28-1/2". Born in Richmond, Virginia in 1904, Archer studied at the Art Student's League in New York City, the Colarossi Academy in Paris and independently with many famous artists of his time. He exhibited at the Corcoran, Virginia Museum of Fine Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the World's Fair and at the National Academy of Design. In addition he exhibited and won numerous awards in museums throughout the United States. He was also a professor at George Washington University.
