484. Joseph-Théodore Deck (French, 1823-1891) and Louis Theodore Eugenge Gluck (French 1820-1898)
"Queen of Hearts" and "Queen of Spades", a pair of tiles by Theodore Deck, painted by Louis Theodore Eugenge Gluck (French 1820-1898). Both tiles are framed and image sizes are apprx 25" x 13-1/2", with frames apprx 32-1/2" x 21-1/2". The spade tile is signed lower right "Eug. Gluck Pinx" and is stamped on verso "TH DECK A.F." One tile has been repaired possibly at the turn of the century (please see detailed photos). The hearts tile is also signed lower right "Eug. Gluck" and has the same deck stamps on verso as the other tile.
Deck was appointed administrator of the Sèvres factory in the last quarter of the 19th century. He developed a new type of soft-paste porcelain which was suitable for making reproductions of the factory's 18th-century styles. These tiles are unique in the fact that they are breaking away from the traditional fancy baroque style and have a somewhat Art's and Craft's element. They are in their original Victorian ebonized wood and gold leaf frames.
