162. B.F. Goodrich Advertising Poster (1 of 3)
"The Goodrich Rubber Man's Vacation". Advertising poster for The B.F. Goodrich Company, depicts jubilant workers playing instruments, farmer and animals on a country road, town in background, text reads "Not the chase, the camp or across the sea where gentle breezes through the Alhambra play, but to the Summer's mecca of all good people - The Pan-American. Away from rubber toil to the sights and scenes of a new (?) midway. How long we can stay and what we do while we are there will depend upon your interest in Goodrich goods." The B.F. Goodrich Company, Akron Rubber Works. Akron, Ohio. Trademarks on either side of text. Framed and matted, image size apprx 19" x 24-1/2", frame size apprx 27-1/2" x 32". Not inspected out of frame.

163. Adolphe Jacques Barthélémy Appian (French, 1818-1898)
"Chemin Des Roches", etching, exhibited in the 1866 Paris Salon. He was an excellent printmaker who was extremely sensitive to light and atmosphere. He was able to create a mood with line and by carefully leaving a fine layer of ink on the surface of the copper plate which prints as pale tone. This reproduction of one of Appian's original works features a landscape scene with a an ox drawn cart and two farmers working to clear the land. At the botton of the image is a title which reads "Chemin des Roches (Environs de Creys). This image was originally published by A. Cadart and J. Luquet in Paris. Plate size apprx 5-1/2" x 8-1/4", paper size apprx 6-1/2" x 9-1/2". This is a duplicate, sold by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Stamped and number on verso, #16594.

164. Maxime Lalanne (French, 1827-1886)
"Demolitions Pour le Percement du Boulevard St. Germain", engraving on paper, plate size apprx 12-1/2" x 9-1/2", paper size apprx 15-3/4" x 13". This is an etching of the demolition of the Rue St. Germain. Lalanne has etched the road in its demolished state, with rubble blocking the street and a worker moving the debris. The image itself is signed in the lower right corner and again below the image in the lower left corner. Beneath the title is the publisher, A. Cadart & F. Chevalier, editeurs, Rue Richlieu 66. Maxime Lalanne, the foremost contributor to the etching revival in France in the mid-to late 1800s, frequently used his etchings as a vehicle to convey political statements. His images often depicted dramatically somber views of the industrial and slum areas of Paris during the Second Empire.

168. John Clarkson Uren (British, 1845-1932)
Seascape of a rocky coast, sailboats skim the water in the distance. Watercolor on paper, signed lower left, double matted and framed with plexi-glass, apprx image size 9-1/4" x 13-1/4", apprx size with frame 24" x 27".
Uren lived at Penzance in 1885 and was in Plymouth in 1898. A marine and landscape painter, Uren painted mostly watercolor views, especially in the West Country. He was exhibiting extensively between 1885 and 1898 and has been exhibitied at Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolors.

The background is very faint and features architectural details as well as the back of a servant woman. Image is signed in lower left corner and is in very good condition.

170. Lake Price (English, c. 1850)
"The Picador Dismounted". Colored lithograph, matted, measures apprx 13-1/4" x 20-1/4". This colored lithograph from England dates apprx 1850. In the image a picador has fallen from his horse. Several other matadors try to help the fallen picador by distracting the bull by waving their capes. One matador attempts to stab the bull while another pulls the picador to safety. This event takes place in a Spanish bullfighting arena. Bullfighting was extremely popular in Spain in the mid 1800's. This image is a lovely example of the drama and danger that was an integral part of bullfighting.

178. Hamilton King (American 1871 - 1952)
Pastel on grey paper of a playful woman wearing long evening gloves, circa early 1900's. Signed lower right "Hamilton King" and "Paris". Framed, overall size apprx 23" x 21-1/2". King was an illustrator, painter, and etcher who studied at the Julian Academy in Paris and was a member of the Society of Illustrators. He was a noted illustrator of women, producing many commissioned images for advertisments such as Coca Cola and ladies journals.

Watercolor on paper, possibly an illustration for Lady Jane Grey, framed within a wood frame and under glass, overall measures apprx 24" x 20", signed lower right. Emma Lane, later Payne, was born in Euclid, Ohio in 1874. Little is known about this Ohio native other than she is listed in Davenports', Who's Who, and was a pupil of Leonard Ochtman and of Frederick Carl Gottwald.
