26. After Sir Peter Lely (British 1618-1680)
"King William III", (1650-1702), he reigned 1689-1702. This is an un-signed 19th century studio interpretation, oil on canvas over keyed stretcher, canvas apprx 18-1/2" x 15-1/4". Overall with frame apprx 27" x 23-1/2". The original portrait, which this copy is based, was painted by Lely and depicts William in armor as a military commander with a spaniel, a symbol of loyalty, by his side. In 1688 William accepted an invitation by a group of leading statesmen to land in Britain with a armed forces in order to preserve Protestant liberties. A year later, after the flight of James II, he and his wife Mary accepted the crown of king and queen. Portrait painter and Principal Painter to Charles II, Lely was born of Dutch parents and trained in Haarlem. He arrived in London in the 1640's and quickly established a reputation as a portraitist. Lely was appointed Principal Painter at the Restoration and knighted in 1680 He was a prolific painter and was one of the most fashionable painters of his time.

27. European Hunt Scene, Late 18th Century
A European painting depicting the aftermath of a hunt. The hunter wears a blue hunting outfit with matching cap. His hounds clamor around him and in one hand he clutches a bird. At his feet is a fox and another game bird. A third hound lays at his feet and sleeps. This is probably a late 18th/early 19th century painting, in the manner of a late 17th/early 18th century painting. It has a red ground layer which is characteristic of an Italian painting. Painting is inscribed on verso in pen, "Cornelis Van Lelienbergh, 1626-1676" and measures apprx 7-1/2" x 10-1/2". Initialed in lower right corner "C.L." or "G.L.".

28. Unknown Artist, "The Sacrament of Penance", Late 18th/Early 19th Century
"The Sacrament of Penance", oil on canvas, adheared to masonite, image apprx 22-1/4" x 29". Mary's hair is swept to the side and her breasts are covered by her Roman garment, which she clasps with her left hand in order to hide her beauty. The right arm is adorned with Roman jewelry. The purple colour of her cloak associates her with the Great Babylon, the mother of all harlots (Revelation 17: 5). Unmarked and unsigned. From the collection of J.A. Birch.

Framed, oil on canvas adheard to board, this painting depicts a Jewish high priest teaching a lay man from an open book. This painting was originally part of the Princess Lida Collection of Thurn and Taxis in Austria.

33. Attributed to William Noble Hardwick (British 1805-1865)
A view of Lyon, "The Bridge", oil on canvas, signed lower left, titled and dated 1855 on verso tag. Depicts a city scene with a bridge and boats beneath. Painting measures apprx 18" x 29". A similar painting exists, however in watercolor and produced a year earlier. This shows the Palais du Justice on the banks of the river Saone with the towers of the Cathedral of St. John in the distance. Signature can not be found.

Beautiful country landscape with bridge and mountains, oil on canvas, simple gold frame, signed lower left, apprx image size 11" x 19", apprx frame size 14-1/2" x 22-1/2". Grandnephew of Alexander Viets Griswold, Griswold was born in Delaware, Ohio in 1834 around 1850. His only instruction in painting was from an elder brother.

Portrait of Anna Maria Daughaday, oil on canvas, mounted on board, signed lower right, apprx image size 27-1/2" x 23". Sitter is wearing a tartan. Letter stating history attached, printed on watermarked paper reads: "Anne Maria Daughaday was born on her father's plantation in Harford county Maryland in 1823 a preacher by the name of Riggs, and died in 1856." Daughaday was the name of a well known Maryland family whose plantation had been in their possession for many generations.

Signed "Chas Warren Eaton" in lower right corner, this painting measures apprx 19-1/2 x 23-1/2"" and depicts a peaceful scene of a field and grove of trees at sunset. Verso has hand written title, location and artist signature on back of strecher. Framers tag from Van's Frame Shop, Bloomfield, NJ. Eaton was one of the most significant 19th Century American painters in the Tonalist art movement.

40. David Young Cameron (Scottish, 1865-1945)
"Perthshire Hills" a gorgeous landscape in original frame, oil on canvas, signed lower right, apprx image size 18" x 22", apprx frame size 26" x 30". Exhibition tag on verso, "F.G.No. 27494 Perthshire Hills D.Y. Cameron". Cameron studied at the Glasgow School of Art where he produced his earliest etchings under the influence of Charles Meryon. After he returned to his homeland after a tour, he concentrated on capturing the spirit of the Scottish rural landscape, such as this painting.
