| 2. Old Babylonian Clay Foundation Cone
Isin Dynasty, circa 1953 B.C., a dedication on a clay cone from the reign of King Ishme-Dagan of Isin. Clay cones, or nails, were inscribed with dedicatory inscriptions, in many duplicates and embedded into the cavities of walls of great buildings in case the building was demolished so that future generations would know to whom to re-dedicate the building. This cone is handwritten with the text around the shaft of the cone in two columns of equal length, leaving the remainder of the cone blank. The text records the building of the wall of Isin by Ishme-Dagan, after exempting the citizens from taxes and freeing them from the corvee labor. 500/800 Sold $460.00 back to catalog |
