78. Menydijl (Australian, Early/Mid 20th Century)

An Arnhemland painter from the 50's and 60's, this painting depicts one of the dances performed in the sacred initiation ceremonies of the Dua Narra. The men paint their bodies with the design of a Gonna and simulate the movements of the Gonna. Gonna is the artist's totem handed down to him from his father. Pigment on bark panel, bark apprx 28-1/4" x 11-1/2", mounted to backing board with frame.
