| 32. Richard Parkes Bonington (English, 1802-1828)
Shoreline at sunset with ragged cliffs and boats, oil on canvas, signed lower left "R.P.Bonington, framed, apprx image size 8-1/2" x 15-1/2", apprx frame size 18" x 24", on four-key stretcher, "Boningtion, London W" printed on verso. Bonington studied in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts and in 1820 entered the studio of Gros. At that time he formed a close friendship with Delacroix. Best known for his sparkling watercolors painted rapidly, directly from nature, Bonington also brought to his oil painting an immediacy and dexterity unusual in his day. Represented in the Louvre and in many distinguished British galleries, Bonington's work can also be seen in the Wallace Collection, London. 5,000/10,000 back to catalog |
