Born Putney, London the twin brother of Charles Maurice Detmold. He exhibited with his brother for the first time at the Royal Academy at the age of thirteen. In 1900 both brothers held a large exhibition at the Fine Art Society, London. From then on they enjoyed notable success, especially with their drawings and prints of plants and animals inspired partly by Albrecht Durer. Their partnership ended tragically in 1908 when Charles Maurice committed suicide at the age of 28. Edward Julius continued working and in the 1920's he entered into a deep, creative phase, due to his deep sadness at the loss of his twin. His illustrations included 16 works for Kipling's Jungle Book in 1903 and an edition of Arabian Knights in 1924. His work is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and in the British Museum, London. 500/700 Sold $575.00 back to catalog |
