578. Whiting and Davis Mesh Purse, C. 1920's

Whiting and Davis Deco-style purse features a traditional Art Deco design in turquoise, brown, yellow and white mesh. This purse is unlined and has a silver frame with an inset enameled design in blue and brown. Stamped "Whiting and Davis Co. Mesh Bags" insignia on both sides of clasp. Purse measures apprx 5-1/2" x 6". Originally known as the Wade & Davis Co., Whiting and Davis earned their new name when Charles Whiting joined the firm in 1876. The Massachusettes based jewelry production company expanded to produce mesh purses after Davis developed a technique to create mesh in the early 1900's.
