Three steel plate etching & engravings from "The Four Stages of Cruelty." Lot includes: First Stage of Cruelty, Second Stage of Cruelty and Cruelty in Perfection. Designed by William Hogarth and Published according to Act of Parliament Feb. 1, 1751. Plate size apprx 15" x 13", paper size apprx 26" x 20". These prints narrate the fictional life of criminal Tom Nero in specific sites in London. Andrew Edmunds describes them as "...the most startling prints made in England in the Eighteenth Century".
