354. Set of Six American Rush Sides Chairs (Late 19th/Early 20th Century)

Possibly Lambert Hitchock (1795–1852). The seats have been replaced. The six chairs are painted black over red, with designs stenciled in colors and gold. The decoration consists of large floral and fruit designs, banded patterns and Greek anthemia in gold. They are of good wood and sturdily built. They have a "bolster" or flat-fronted top rail, with round, splayed, ring-turned front legs, sometimes tapered with ball feet. The legs and rungs are simple and well turned. The seats are of rush and they all have the proper "aging", or wear to the feet rests and slats from use.
