164. Maxime Lalanne (French, 1827-1886)

"Demolitions Pour le Percement du Boulevard St. Germain", engraving on paper, plate size apprx 12-1/2" x 9-1/2", paper size apprx 15-3/4" x 13". This is an etching of the demolition of the Rue St. Germain. Lalanne has etched the road in its demolished state, with rubble blocking the street and a worker moving the debris. The image itself is signed in the lower right corner and again below the image in the lower left corner. Beneath the title is the publisher, A. Cadart & F. Chevalier, editeurs, Rue Richlieu 66. Maxime Lalanne, the foremost contributor to the etching revival in France in the mid-to late 1800s, frequently used his etchings as a vehicle to convey political statements. His images often depicted dramatically somber views of the industrial and slum areas of Paris during the Second Empire.
