163. Adolphe Jacques Barthélémy Appian (French, 1818-1898)

"Chemin Des Roches", etching, exhibited in the 1866 Paris Salon. He was an excellent printmaker who was extremely sensitive to light and atmosphere. He was able to create a mood with line and by carefully leaving a fine layer of ink on the surface of the copper plate which prints as pale tone. This reproduction of one of Appian's original works features a landscape scene with a an ox drawn cart and two farmers working to clear the land. At the botton of the image is a title which reads "Chemin des Roches (Environs de Creys). This image was originally published by A. Cadart and J. Luquet in Paris. Plate size apprx 5-1/2" x 8-1/4", paper size apprx 6-1/2" x 9-1/2". This is a duplicate, sold by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Stamped and number on verso, #16594.
