| 125. Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683-1741)
A copper plate engraving of asparagus from Phytanthoza Iconographia 1735-45. The Thyrsus asparagi, the Asparagus, Asperge and the Asparagus monstrosus. Numbered 182 in plate, upper right corner, plate measures apprx 12-3/4" x 8-1/2", paper apprx 15-3/4" x 10". Visible chain lines and water mark in center of paper. The copper plates were prepared with etched outlines and mezzotinted interior tones. The images were printed in color from the plates and finished with hand coloring. Please see details page for more information about Weinmann. Weinmann's botanicals are some of the most sought after examples of 18th century engraving. The color was partially added during the mezzotint process and finished by hand with watercolor. Weinmann was from Regensburg, Germany and was an apothecary by trade. He compiled an impressive collection of botanical illustrations, for which he commissioned several artists, including Georg Dionysius Ehret, N. Asamin, Johann Ambrosius Beurer, Christiaan Jakob Trew and Johannes Burman. They formed the basis of his life's work, the Phytanthoza Iconographia. The work appeared in half-yearly installments published by Bartholomew Seuter, Johann Ridinger and Johann Haid between the years of 1735-45. The publication resulted in a combination of a traditional herbal book and flower book which became popular in the Baroque period. 200/300 Sold $184.00 back to catalog |
