450. Dogon Kanaga Mask, Early 20th Century


This Dogon Kanaga Mask was orignially purchased from the Thomas Ford Gallery in Boston on July 24, 1968. The mask is a large, towering wooden structure that has black and red pigmentation. The box-like angular face mask has a sharp, elongated nose surmounted by two pairs of double L-shaped arms, both extending up towards the heavens. The arms are attached to the central wooden post with leather binding. Overall measures apprx 33" x 25" x 8."

451. Marka Metal Covered Mask, Early 20th Century


This Marka metal covered mask was purchased from Odyssey in 1967. This mask has metal plaques attaced to a hardwood base with small nails. Three red fiber tufts adorn the ears and nose. Two horns protrude from the top of the head. Overall it measures apprx 14" x 6-1/2" x 5".

This Yoruba Gelede mask was originally purchased at the Ross Widen Gallery. This mask has three tiers of carved hair painted with black dots. The face features protruding lips and bulging eyes. Black lines on the face indicate the presence of scarification. Overall measures apprx 14" x 5-1/2" x 4".

Originally purchased from the Tribal Arts Gallery in 1971. The Senufo standing bird figure features a simple and stylized figure of a bird with an elongated beak and neck. It has square-shaped wings and a rounded base. Carved geometric design on surface of beak and protruding, swollen belly. Overall measures apprx 40-1/2" x 17" x 8".

Carved wooden Senufo chair was orignially purchased by Craft Caravan in New York in 1975. This chair has a sturdy wooden seat with very little ornamentation. Side panels are accented with hand-carved X-shapes. Decorative backrest and simple legs. Overall measures apprx 29" x 26" x 20."

455. Bobo Ule Mask, Early 20th Century


This mask was originally purchased from Sam Hilu Primitive Arts in 1970. This Ule mask takes the form of a circular face painted with geometric designs in black, white and red. Frayed and knotted rope attached to back of the head symbolizes hair. Verso has black and white checkerboard pattern. The mouth and eyes are comprised of concentric rings. Face is surmounted by a large plank accented with zigzag, triangular and linear motifs. The tip of the plank is adorned with a set of horns. Ule masks were often used in burial ceremonies or initiation ceremonies. Measures apprx 59" x 16."

Originally purchased from George Juergens, New York, April 21, 1969. This set of carved wooden doors features pointed corners that served as hinges. Front is covered with four registers of carved human figures. Sliding wooden bolt allows doors to be locked. Doors are tied together with thin strips of leather. Doors measure apprx 31" x 18."

A documentary scroll about the crusades in Ethiopia, sewn in parts with hand paintied scenes and decorations. The top painting showns a Saint on horse killing a demon. Lower panel has an angel and cetral face with border. Painted on vellum with bright colors. Professionally hinged and framed, scroll is apprx 64"L x 3-3/4"W.
