| 241. Albert Ernest Carrier Belleuse (French 1824-1887)
Gilt bronze figure titled "Liseuse" shows a woman in medieval dress, standing in contrapposto pose leafing through a book. At the base of her feet a signature "A. Carrier. Belleuse" is visible. A plaque at the base of the entire sculpture reads "Liseuse, Par Carrier Belleuse (Grand Prix du Salon)". Her name, Liseuse, translates into "the reader". This piece is one of the smaller copies, and is made of bronze with gilt. Measures apprx 4" x 13". Belleuse had an extensive career that included working at the Minton factory in Staffordshire, England, serving in a top post at the Sevre porcelain factory, and offering tutelage to the sculptor Auguste Rodin. "Liseuse" or "Reader" won a prize at one of the yearly salon exhibitions. Often an artist exhibited a life size piece at a salon and then made smaller copies. 400/600 Sold $356.50 back to catalog |
