| 453. Standing Senufo Porpianong, Early 20th Century
Originally purchased from the Tribal Arts Gallery in 1971. The Senufo standing bird figure features a simple and stylized figure of a bird with an elongated beak and neck. It has square-shaped wings and a rounded base. Carved geometric design on surface of beak and protruding, swollen belly. Overall measures apprx 40-1/2" x 17" x 8". The Senufo people are found in the Northern Ivory Coast. Figures such as this were often produced to enhance fertility. The pregnant belly of the hornbill symbolizes the female, while the phallic shape of the beak symbolizes the male. 400/800 Sold $299.00 back to catalog |
