451. Marka Metal Covered Mask, Early 20th Century

This Marka metal covered mask was purchased from Odyssey in 1967. This mask has metal plaques attaced to a hardwood base with small nails. Three red fiber tufts adorn the ears and nose. Two horns protrude from the top of the head. Overall it measures apprx 14" x 6-1/2" x 5".

The Marka people belong to the Soninke tribe which is now located in northern Mali. Marka ceremonial masks are characterized by elongated faces and long, angular noses accented with red fiber tufts and metal plaque work. Masks such as these are known as Ndomo masks are are used in boy's age-grade ceremonies and circumcisions.
