173. Clyde J. Singer (American, 1908-1999)

Graphite on beige paper. This particular drawing depicts two women standing on a busy street corner. Signed "C. Singer" in lower right and dated '39. Image measures apprx 7-3/4" x 6-1/2", framed apprx 16" x 15". Singer was born and raised in Ohio and later attended the Art Students League in New York. He did most of his sketching after serving in the Army in the Phillipines, New Guinea and Japan during World War II. He is quoted as once saying "painting to me is the most fun there is". His works grace many museums, most notedly The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, where he retained an office and a great presence in his later years.

Some of Singer's most desirable images date from the period of this drawing; and his love of the female American figure as a subject is evident.
